BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Alberto M. Fernandez was confirmed as Ambassador of the United States to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea on December 24, 2009. Prior to this appointment, he served as Charge d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan from June 2007 to December 2009.
Ambassador Fernandez previously served as Director of Press and Public Diplomacy in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs from 2005 to 2007 and as Director for Iraq Public Diplomacy from 2004 to 2005. He has also served in Afghanistan, Jordan, Guatemaula, Syria, Iraq, Kuwait, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and the United Arab Emirates.
Ambassador Fernandez is a graduate of the University of Arizona and the Defense Language Institute. He is the recipient of several awards, including the 2006 Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Public Diplomacy, the 1996 Linguist of the Year Award, and a 2003 Superior Honor Award for his work in Afghanistan. Ambassador Fernandez speaks Arabic and Spanish.
