BCIU is pleased to announce the opening of applications for the
2010 Corporate Practicum Program

** Summary **

The BCIU-U.S. Department of State 2010 Corporate Practicum program places mid-career Foreign Service Officers (FSOs) in two to six month assignments in the private sector. The program is designed to expose FSOs to international business issues on which U.S. companies seek U.S. Government assistance. In addition these FSOs will gain insight on corporate leadership and management techniques that will benefit them and the Department as FSOs advance in their careers.

** Program Facts **

The specific duties and responsibilities of the FSO within the host company are to be negotiated between the company and the individual officer in advance. In crafting an assignment, participating companies should keep in mind that the goal of this program is to expose the officer to corporate leadership and management techniques that will benefit the individual officer and the Department as they advance in their career. Especially useful are assignments that match the officers sector and/or regional interests and apply knowledge gleaned in the intensive Economic and Commercial Studies training program that they will have just completed.

The officers participating in the program will be available for placement with a company after completing the Economic and Commercial Studies Course in mid-February. Most participants will need to serve their assignments in the Washington, D.C. area, however, assignments in other cities may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to approval by the participating officers. Please note that the salary of the Corporate Practicum participants is paid by the U.S. Department of State. Companies will be responsible for travel and related incidental costs for participants in the program.

This practicum serves as an elective capstone to the U.S. Department of State’s intensive six month professional development course in Economic and Commercial Studies. All Corporate Practicum participants will complete this course in early March 2010. The U.S. Department of State considers this course a rough equivalent to a master’s degree in economics. It includes coursework in mathematics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics, international trade theory, commercial policy, international finance, money and banking, country data analysis, economic policy reform, international capital markets, and public finance. Applied coursework on such topics as trade disputes, resolution, competition policy, trade agreement implementation, environmental economics, and project finance analysis are covered in the program.
